The Purpose of the TPS Master Thesis Award is to encourage students to write excellent papers in the field of photonics.

Awarding Criteria

  1. Select up to a maximum of five master's theses, each awarded a certificate and a prize of NT$5,000.
  2. The awards will be presented during TPS Annual General Assembly.
  3. The outstanding achievements of the awardees will be publicly announced in the TPS Optical Engineering Journal. (Awardees are obliged to publish their papers in the TPS Optical Engineering Journal

Eligibility for Application

  1. Must hold individual membership in this association.
  2. The thesis should primarily be of a research article. Contributions in theoretical, experimental, or manufacturing aspects are eligible for recommendation, but must have been published within the last 18 months from the date of recommendation.
  3. Language: No restriction on the language, it can be in Chinese or any foreign language. If written in a foreign language, a brief summary in Chinese must be provided.
  4. Content: The focus should be the original or draft of the master's thesis, supplemented by relevant published papers.
  5. Limitations: In the same year, the same advising professor can recommend a maximum of two master thesis. No restrictions on the numbers of the recommendation letters.

Registration and Recommendation Procedure

  • Application form
  • One recommendation letter. Full text of the thesis in PDF format, including a chinese abstract and a list of relevant published papers in Word format.

All the aforementioned documents should be sent in hard copy to the TPS Taipei Office, and also provide an E-doc via Email. *

Submission Deadline

The deadline is August 31st, 2023, postmarked.

Evaluation Process

The evaluation process for awarding theses depends on the quantity and types of submitted theses, the Director of the Academic Committee of the Society will invite relevant experts and scholars in the field to form a selection panel. The evaluation of the theses will follow the principle of abstention in cases where evaluators belong to the same school and department as the candidates, which the evaluators may be reappointed. The evaluation process will take place from September to November each year, and the awards will be presented at TPS Annual General Assembly.

The review will be conducted by the selection panel, evaluating the overall information provided by the applicants. After consolidating the evaluation results, the Chief Director of the selection panel will determine the results. The results may be shared with the evaluators for review. Ultimately, the list must be approved during the TPS Board of Directors and Board of Supervisors Meeting at the end of the year.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Value and contribution to photonics research - 40%
  • Originality of the content - 40%
  • Structure of the paper - 20%

Implementation Method

These regulations shall be implemented after being approved by the Board of Governors and Supervisors of the Society and shall be amended in the same manner.
